Andy Shaw put Gainsborough ahead after twelve minutes and the home keeper, Newcombe had to be alert to foil, Imre Varadi, Carl Shutt and Ray Wallace to preserve that lead as they sought to get an equalizer late in the first half. Paul Pettinger replaced Scott Cousin in goal at Half-Time along with O'Neill replacing Eaton at Outside Left. Lloyd increased the lead for the home team in the fifty-fourth minute. Carl Shutt headed against the bat nine minutes later but it was the home team that scored next when Dwyer scored in the sixty-fifth minute. Twelve minutes later Leeds finally got on the scoresheet when Damian Henderson headed home a Dylan Kerr cross, but after David Connor had replaced Joseph at Right Back in the eightieth minute, the home side added two further goals, by Eley in the eighty-third minute and a second for Dwyer three minutes later. John Key of Rotherham was the referee.
